Ocean Signal’s new EDF2 Digital Flare the ‘brightest’ choice one can make
Ocean Signal’s new EDF2 electronic digital flare is a sophisticated distress signalling device that meets the requirements of Maritime New Zealand’s International Voyage Certificate (IVC), meaning it can replace up to four red handheld flares as well as the US’s rigorous RTCM Standard 13200.0.
With a multi-LED light array, the EDF2 boasts a visible range of up to 8 nautical miles, a wide 180° luminous angle and an impressive operational life of at least three hours. It uses red-orange and cyan LEDs for enhanced visibility on the water as well as an infrared (IR) component for even greater visibility when night vision equipment is being employed by search and rescue organisations.
When in use, the EDF2 enhances the chances of a successful rescue by emitting the flash characteristic for the International Morse Code for S-O-S, where the first “S” is represented by three red-orange LED flashes, followed by the “O” which is represented by three cyan LED flashes, and the final “S” which is represented by another three red-orange LED flashes. At the same time, the IR component flashes the same S-O-S pattern optimised for visibility by Night Vision Goggles (NVG).
With built-in buoyancy, the EDF2’s compact design also includes a handy distress flag, an easy-to-use mounting bracket and user replaceable batteries.
Ocean Signal’s new EDF2 electronic digital flare is available now.
